Sunday 20th November 2016 : In the week when Steven Gerrard confirmed that his body was telling him to retire from the beautiful game, 16 die-hards turned up at the Leisure Centre tonight whose bodies have been telling them this for the past 20 years. There were, of course, some missing because of minor injury – Malc, for example, whose new walking approach to 5 a-side has attracted many followers, and Paulo, who was nursing a recurrent leg injury. Rick Pott almost made it onto the injury list in the early part of the evening when a well-aimed shot against the wall rebounded to near knock him out, but as is the case with our regulars, minor mishaps like this are run off after  a quick dust down in the time-honoured fashion. Nigel was there again for example, following his cancer surgery, and we welcomed back a lost soul in the form of Martin Street, who confirmed that you don’t easily lose what you once had. This was in fact one of our finest nights with three well-balanced squads and no clearly dominant team: we all beat and lost to each other, usually by the odd goal.
We will miss for the next few months Dave Brown, who is off to New Zealand on a sabbatical with his family, having been advised by key players not to get involved in rugby down there; and of course next week is the last of the 5.30-7.00 sessions, with kick offs in the future being 5.15 to enable the Leisure Centre to close a little earlier.

Sunday 27th November 2016 : Poor old Stretford United boss Jose Mourinho was throwing a wobbler at Old Trafford again getting himself sent off at the same time as the Vets were engaged in another footy fest but without the histrionics of the not so special one. The night was dominated by the Young Guns who had Nigel Caldwell guesting and a thoroughly fine part he played tackling like a man on a mission and popping up with a couple of cracking goals. Sadly he ended up in a heap and had to retire with a leg injury. Hope it's not too bad Nige and we hope see you back up and running in the near future. Anthony, the two Ricks and Josh gave us a reminder of how to finish with a glut of goals between them. Mary's Moaners put the block on them a couple of times but overall they were excellent. John Goodwin was on the boil netting some fine strikes to go with Paulo's rippers. The Strollers had a mixed night with new boy Gavin Kent finding his feet difficult to control in very slippery footwear but did OK.  Graham Levine was on fire wellying in some absolute blinders to add to Ade Hewitt's slick finishing. Chris Anthony found himself in the "David Silva" mode with some very choice passing. I managed half a dozen games out and even hit the onion bag so things are looking up for me.
Finally,  Q: What is the difference between Jose Mourinho and a baby?
A: The baby will stop whining after awhile.

Sunday 4th December 2016 : Quite a few of the boys out of action tonight, Ade Hewitt away on holibobs, Paulo at a family party, Nigel Caldwell, Chris Todd, James Kemp all injured and Dave Brown in New Zealand to name a few. So it was left to the 13 good men and true who rocked up to battle it out in a fiercely contested contest. Myself and Graham Levine were drafted in as guests for Mary's Moaners in Paulo's absence and Chris Anthony and Gavin Kent joined The Young Guns to considerably increase their average age. Well the surprise was Mary's Moaners completely dominated proceedings winning all three contests albeit with very close scores. Anthony, Josh and Rick provided the usual pace and quick passing with Rick in particular ripping in some fizzers but it was the overall team work that saw Mary's home. Goals came from all over the team even grabbing a good few myself. Things are improving for me all the time although a couple of runs and I'm breathing through my back side. Johnboy in particular had a cracking night scoring and tackling with one particular clash with Chris Anthony reviving memories of the assassin lurking within. Chris Anthony had a mixed night one minute looking like a one legged Wilfried Bony and the next strutting round like David Silva. Gavin Kent showed much improvement from last week picking out passes and managing to stay on his feet for the whole session. Graham Levine threatened the very fabric of the building at times but still managed to grab himself a good share of Mary's goals. The Young Guns did find success in the final game winning the best of one shootout when Josh wellied in the winner past a hapless Zsu Zsu Mastin in nets, the final kick in what was a most enjoyable night of five a side footy.

Sunday 11th December 2016 : Oh dear, what a weekend - City got well and truly stuffed at Leicester 4-2, their defence was looser than an elephant with Diarrhoea but we live to fight again on Wednesday when Watford come to town. Tonight though, 13 vets were treated to a super session with all teams winning but the Young Guns winning the most. Anthony Graham was in superb form delivering passes with the regularity of a metronome and Josh Mackie and Rick Westwood getting on the end of them to great effect. Rick Pott in the meantime was patrolling at the back and adding his experience, you can't beat a man who knows when to put his foot on the ball. The Young Guns were firing like a well tuned Ferrari, that is until they came up against the Strollers who at the time,. were firing like a badly tuned Trabant. Gavin Kent defended like he was on trial for City and when Chris Anthony chipped a pass to Graham Levin the master blaster ripped it into the Young Guns net. We then had to stem the Young Guns tidal wave of attacking and with Podders guesting in nets stopping everything thrown at him and myself actually running, yes running, to cover the overlapping Pottie, we somehow held out. Not before though the miss of the night, with Podders grounded and no one marking Rick Westwood, Josh Mackie fed him the ball completely unmarked in front of goal - he somehow managed to prod the ball wide of the post and so we did a gig of delight to celebrate a famous victory. Mary's Moaners also managed to beat the Young guns after that to add to a very productive evening, getting the better of my Strollers more often than not with Chris Podmore the architect behind most of those wins. Paulo managed a couple of his trade mark missiles and Zsu Zsu Mastin managed one particular rasper into the far corner against the Young Guns. So overall a cracking session and hopefully more of the same next week in our last games before Christmas.

Don't forget Kick Off is at 5:15 now so be here early

Forgot to mention last week, Nigel Caldwell tore his lateral ligament a fortnight ago and is on crutches so get better soon Nige, me and the lads send you all their best.

Sunday 18th December 2016 : Only Eight die hard vets braved the last game of 2016 . A full complement of Five Moaners Two Young Guns plus the return of James Kemp making up the Quartets. The Old Master Keith Mastin was loaned out adding experience and cockney guile to the Young Guns. It was decided due to the poor turn out that our silent wooden Goalkeepers should also make a return. Jim Bench and Tim Burr would both have outstanding games and frustrate the strikers all evening.
To make the match more interesting the shoot past the red line only rule was also re introduced
The first game went the way of the Moaners 10 -5 . Who were quicker out of the blocks, Chris Podmore netting the first three, Ronny Dooley and John Goodwin finding the net and Paulo blasting in the winner. If not for the previously mentioned wooden keepers the game would have been over sooner, as it was this first rubber lasted a gruelling 45 minutes.
The Second Match looked to be heading the same way when the Moaners took an early 3-0 lead. James Kemp had other ideas , his hat trick levelling things. Keith Mastin then stuck a brace. Rick Westwood finally found his feet and started scoring and Anthony Graham popped in the odd goal or two. The Moaners pegged the Young Guns back to 9-8 , but a scuffed bobbler bouncing agonisingly over the out stretched Jim bench gave the Young Guns victory.
Even though there was only Eight of us , the games were really entertaining, full of humour, sportsmanship and great goals, a fitting end to the Year.

Big thanks to our guest writer for this report.  Sorry I missed the last session of the year but watching victory over Arsenal at the Etihad was a not to be missed event.
May I wish you all a really good Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year. Next Vets session is at 5:15 on Sunday 8th January 2017 - see you all then, keep fit!!

Sunday 8th January 2017 : Well Christmas is behind us and a decent turn out of the lads to greet 2017. Only a couple of New shirts on view, Paulo's new white jobbie was a bit smart but best newcomer was Podders Stockport County top, quality. The most exciting part of the new year is the struggle to be the first goal scorer and tonight was no different. In an end to end game between Mary's Moaners and the Young Guns chances galore went begging until Rick Westwood drilled in a stonker. Now that created a record as this was the forth year on the run that he has took the honour, well done Rick. Johnboy equalised straight after to end the first game at 1-1.The rest of the night was taken up with regular wins for Mary's and the Young Guns over the Strollers who in fairness were carrying Chris Anthony who admitted he had over indulged over Christmas and myself as I strive for the ability to complete more than two games on the run. Ade Hewitt after a good session suffered a repeat of his foot injury and looks likely to miss a number of weeks recovering. Rick Pott found his scoring boots after his customary visit to the floor after only 5 minutes, recovering enough to drill one howitzer into my chest and firing another couple into the corners past me. Zsu Zsu Mastin managed to wangle his way into the Young Guns squad and to be honest looked the part belying his aging frame. Dave Vernon snapped and growled his way through the ninety minutes at one point having what he called a Tourette's Syndrome moment. All good fun on our return to the action and hopefully more of the same next week.

Kick Off next week 5:30 for one week only - after that we revert to 5:15

Sunday 15th January 2017 : Just a short report tonight as I have family round. Fourteen vets rolled up at the Leisure Centre to do battle. Josh was looking particularly smug after his Everton team battered my beloved City 4-0 at Goodison Park and wore his full Everton kit. The Strollers I think shared the honours with the Young Guns with a very impressive session full of honest to goodness effort. Graham Levine was crashing in the goals ably supported by Rick Evans and an in form James Kemp who certainly knew where the onion bag was. Dave Vernon had a coming together with Chris Podmore, really a case of handbags I'm afraid although Chris was mightily unimpressed. Mary's Moaners were there for the taking tonight clearly missing their main Moaner Johnboy who's sunning himself in Lanzagrote. Rocket Ronnie and Paulo battled away and did manage a win against the Young Guns but that was it for them tonight. The Young Guns flattered to deceive wining games in a canter then losing or drawing in quick succession. Overall a good nights footy  played generally in good spirit with a bag full of goals and lots of other good stuff.

Sunday 22nd January 2017 : Fourteen  bodies dragged themselves down to the Leisure Centre tonight for a very eventful game of 5 a side footy. This session had a bundle od cracking games and incident to make for a very enjoyable session. Not so enjoyable session for Pottie though as he was felled by a full bloodied volley into the wedding tackle that just took the edge off his game for ten minutes or so. The Young Guns just managed to finish top team this week although it was a close run thing. They started well with Josh and Rick Westwood lashing the ball into the net with beautifully placed drives. Anthony Graham and Pottie were holding things together at the back and they looked set to repeat their winning performance of September 2015 when they won all their games. This however nearly hit the buffers when the Strollers were winning 2-1, Josh fired in a shot that hit the side netting (goalkeepers ball) and bounced out to the feet of Rick Westwood who duly fired in the net. Referee Keith "Andre Marriner" Mastin astonishingly ruled the ball had hit the post allowing the none goal to stand. The Strollers heads dropped and the inevitable winner arrived to keep the Young Guns on track. Thankfully Mary's Moaners pulled them up in their tracks with a 0-0 draw shortly afterwards with Ronnie Dooley and Paulo Garner defending like errrrrr defenders. The Strollers again showed up well with Chris Anthony slotting passes like David Silva, Graham Lavine and Rick Evans wellying in spectacular goals and James Kemp having a blinder allround including in nets as opposed to myself whose goalkeeping would have made Claudio Bravo look good. Mary's Moaners and the Strollers both gave the Young Guns a run for their money in the closing stages mutually grabbing victories with Chris Podmore in particlar putting himself about to good effect. No Ronnie Dooley next week but Johnboy should be back from his trip to Lanzarote raring to go.

Sunday 29th January 2017 : Cold and damp outside the Leisure Centre, not much warmer inside. Enough bodies for Three teams this week. Malc Stubbs returning for his first appearance of 2017, filling the absent boots of Ronny Dooley as an honouree Moaner. After 30 minutes it became clear that the Young Guns would have to be disbanded. The regular Quadruplets of Anthony Graham, Rick Pott, Josh Mackie and Rick Westwood, dismantled their foes with consument ease. Scoring twenty plus goals in their first five games. The Moaners did limit them to a 2-1 defeat , but the strollers suffered terribly. Graham Levine lead the grumbles and after consultation with the majority the Guns were surgically removed from each other.
Josh Mackie transferred to the Stollers and Malc Stubbs swopped over to the Young Guns. These new teams made for some more even contests . Chris Anthony benefiting from the passing of Josh Mackie to snatch some super close range goals. Gavin Kent had a mixed night ending the session as goalkeeper where his dazzling display contributed to many a win. James Kemp took a half volley from Chris Podmore in the gonads leaving him prostrate, then while refereeing the next bout was caught in a John Goodwin and Rick Pott sandwich leaving him with bruised ribs.
Either side of these comedy moments there were fine displays of Football from the founding Fathers. John Goodwin whacking a couple of crackers past Rick Westwood and if not for the post would have had a hat trick. Late on Keith Mastin chased down a lost cause into the corner, shaking off the attentions of Graham Levine, side stepped, shimmied, dragged the ball back and slotted the ball into the net. Absolutely priceless!!! ( How old are you Keith??? ).
More memorable finishes included rockets from , Anthony Graham ,Chris Podmore and Graham Levine. Paulo managed a late left foot strike to break his two week old duck. Malc Stubbs enjoying the freedom of playing with the youth also banged in a couple. Josh Mackie using his quick feet to slot home sent the crowd into raptures. We have seen many retro shirts and a various array of shorts over the years but to my knowledge never a pair of ladies tights!!. It is with regret I have to report that what Rick Pott was wearing tonight was nothing short of women’s lingerie. Thankfully he left the matching bra in the changing room.
Another Super Soccer Sunday comes to an end , next week a familiar complement of, Fatties, Thinnies, Oldies, Youngies, Baldies, Baddies, Goodies and now cross dressers will turn the clock back to those jumpers for goalposts playground days of old.

Sorry for the late posting, this wasn't the fault of the guest writer who yet again excelled with a crackin' report. Back next Sunday after City's game against Swansea - bring it on.

Sunday 5th February 2017 : Chris Anthony and myself had to hot foot it from the Etihad to make tonight's 5 a side clash which turned into a feast of fascinating contests. The Young Guns set out to totally destroy the Strollers in the first game ending in a 6-1 rout.  Rich Westwood fired in an unstoppable hat trick to add to super strikes from Josh Mackie and Anthony Graham. Things weren't looking too promising for the Strollers who had Shane Lalley making his vets debut along with Dan Bailey on his first appearance since February of last year. Next on were Mary's Moaners who surely wouldn't get the same treatment although Pottie had to pull out and was replaced by Graham Levine. Well they put up a good show losing by the single goal but with Johnboy tackling like a combined harvester and Paulo and Ronnie harassing in mid field they weren't far away. Another game and and another defeat for the Strollers this time against Mary's Moaners who had Chris Podmore in the mood and Paulo Garner drilling one in from the half way line. The Young Guns continued to dominate but that  came to a sudden halt when Mary's Moaners pulled one out of the bag with a fine draw after some wicked goalkeeping by Zsu Zsu Mastin - the buffers had been hit! After the Strollers had grafted out a draw against the Moaners they then put the Young Guns to the proverbial sword winning 3-1 with Chris Anthony, Dan Bailey and Rick Evans doing the damage before Rich Westwood pulled one back but by then they were a spent force. So overall a blinding nights footy full of shock results and floods of goals to go with them. The Young Guns were top side of the night but with both their opposing sides fielding two  sexagenarians they were certainly given a run for their money.

Sunday 12th February 2017 : Only eleven bodies rolled up to contest the 5 a side session tonight but that was enough to provide us with a pretty decent contest. Rick Evans dropped into Mary's Moaners squad to make it six verses five. The Young Guns struggled to cope with the slick passing of the Moaners who have a habit of knitting together into a well oiled unit. Paul Garner and Ronnie Dooley were providing Chris Podmore and Rick Evans with the ammunition to fire the Moaners into a substantial lead. Rick Westwood and Graham Levine were firing mainly blanks in reply other than one fine piece of skill from Rick when he flicked in a beauty after a mazy run. Rick then survived a suicide dribble past John the assassin at speed. Johnboy resisted the temptation to launch the Young Gun into orbit - thank God. Mary's closed out the game winning comfortably 10-6. At this point Zsu Zsu Mastin decided to transfer himself to the Young Guns to try to add a little balance to the proceedings. The old cockney hippie added his no frills laid back style to the stuttering Young Guns who responded with a much needed improvement. In a close fought game Anthony Graham pulled the strings and suddenly goals started to flow although the Moaners matched the Young Guns strike for strike. Rick Pott and Graham Levine found their form and even I managed to break my duck with a stonker past Ronnie in nets. At 9-9 up stepped Rick Westwood to fire in the winner making it one win apiece. There wasn't enough time to finish the final game so most of us left the Leisure Centre well pleased with our efforts.

Sunday 19th February 2017 : On a weekend when the underdogs took all the plaudits in the FA Cup the Strollers came back to the fore with an outstanding performance in this weeks 5 a side event at the Leisure Centre. Graham Levine was inspirational with his purple trainers lighting up the proceedings as he wellied in the goals from all over the pitch. Dave Brown fresh from his trip to the Antipodes also rose to the occasion with a few belters of his own. James Kemp and Chris Anthony both showed well with James skipping round the pitch like a good 'un and Chris errrrr, skipping! My goalkeeping was a mixture of Manuel Neuer and Claudio Bravo, one minute saving and distributing immaculately and the next like Coco the Clown or Bravo!
We didn't end up top team but we certainly gave the opposition a run for their money. Mary's Moaners just about took that honour with moaner in chief, Johnboy, doing his Clint Eastwood impression (The good the bad and the ugly). Zsu Zsu Mastin slapped one long range humdinger past me together with other long rangers from Ronnie and Paulo. Chris Podmore was on the end of a miss hit Kempo effort which shot up sharply smacking him in the kisser - painful! Well what happened to the Young Guns?  They weren't really at the races tonight on the end of a 4-0 defeat to Mary's and two set backs against the Strollers together with a clutch of draws. Dan Bailey returned to bolster them but after a few early doors crackers he faded from sight. Anthony Graham did his best to drive them forward but generally they were sorted out by the old gits in Mary's and the Strollers. Again missing the influence of Josh Mackie I fear they will be back with a bang next week to inflict pain and retribution on our creaking frames - we'll see.......

Sunday 26th February 2017 : Only 11 bodies braved the stormy weather to bob down to the Leisure centre for a game of Football this week. A welcome return for Ade Hewitt after his recent ankle injury. We decided to play a 5 verses 6 game . Younger Guns would play with 5 and their opposition with the combined experience of over 300 Years had the extra vet.
The Guns game out blazing and swept aside the Old Boys . The three Ricks, Westwood, Evan’s and Pott crashing through the opposition defence at the speed of light. Supplied and assisted by Anthony Graham and Ade Hewitt. The first match went in a flash 10-6 to the Frantic Five. The second match was much closer, Chris Anthony in the loan striker roll banged in some crackers, one from an impossible angle. John Goodwin and Ronny Dooley also started finding the net. The Guns continued to hassle and hound and drew level at 9-9 . Paulo had the last word his long range side footer securing a 10-9 win for the Old boys.
The Guns returned the favour in the third game winning by the same one goal margin. Even with Some great strikes from Dave Brown and Keith Mastin by the Old boys , they just couldn’t finish them off . Ade Hewitt equalised and Rick Evans Got the Guns winner shrieking with joy as his shot found the net.
Lots of tired legs for the last 20 minutes and no clear winner when the whistle blew. Not the greatest quality of football you will ever see ( Perhaps due to the absence of Malc ). Full of mistakes , misses and muddles , still a good run around to start the week. Of course we will all be back next Sunday.

Just a quick get well soon to MOANER “ACE”, Chris Podmore who caught the ball in the face last week and damaged his eye . Hope it’s not too serious. Best wishes from all the boys.

NOTE – I was clearing some stuff out of the garage and came across this from 2006. The best vets 5 a side team I have been in ……just a petty we never kicked a ball , ha ahaha .
