Sunday 12th June 2016 : The Euro's kicked off in style on Friday with France nicking it in the dying minutes and on Saturday, Wales triumphant against Slovakia and England suffering an injury time equaliser against the Ruskies. Add to that the England fans battling with the Russians in Marseille and you've got a game on...   Back at the Leisure Centre we were treated to a slightly less confrontational contest which was played in a much more leisurely fashion. Mary's Moaners treated us to a fine nights footy remaining unbeaten in all their games thanks to a superb example of team work and enterprise. With Paulo and Ronnie dominant in midfield Chris Podmore and Johnboy revelled in netting the goals. The Young Guns weren't too far behind Mary's but their efforts were more concentrated on beating the Strollers who had two over 60's and an over 70's player. Indeed with Ade Hewitt and Graham Levine they had probably the best two strikers on view but defending wasn't their forte. A couple of draws were all they had to show for their efforts and it took a two goal salvo from myself in the last game when I came out of nets, to sneak a draw from Mary's Moaners.  The Young Guns were indeed firing on all cylinders Anthony, Josh and Rick all hitting spectacular strikes added to the efforts from Dave Brown but again, the defending wasn't the best. Chris Anthony had one of those nights when everything went wrong from the first minute when he rifled a cross field pass straight into my legs for a spectacular own goal, he went from Silvaesque to Bonyesque.
Still a brilliant session and a last mention for our cockney hippie leader, Keith Mastin - 68 years young he never stopped running for the ninety minutes, whacked in a couple of pearlers and defended like a good 'un.

Sunday 19th June 2016 : The European Championship is in full swing with England and Wales looking likely to go through to the knock out stages. Joe Hart dropped a clanger in the Wales game letting a 35 yard free kick from Gareth Bale slip past him. Well I did a few of those tonight in nets not making a very good impression against a rampant Mary's Moaners side. They finished victorious winning two games on the trot. My team, the Young Guns with Benefits, looked a little bit jaded like Harry Kane and Raheem Stirling after a tough season. Anthony, Josh and Rick were just not on the ball, losing possession and flaunting good scoring chances. Chris Anthony plugged away at the back but at the end of the day they were just off the pace. Mary's on the other hand pegging away none stop with Paulo and Ronnie bossing the mid field while Kempo and Chris Podmore fired the bullets into the net., even Zsu Zsu got in on the act. Young Podders fizzed and popped like a Chinese rip rap charging around causing nothing but problems for the Young Guns. Kempo likewise flew into tackles like his life depended on it, to be honest I didn't help much letting goals in through my legs and a couple of times throwing the ball to the onrushing Mary's Strikers, Paulo in particular rattled one straight into the top corner, ah well.
Still it was a decent run out, more of the same next week with a bit of luck.

Sunday 26th June 2016 : Well, tonight's turnout was a little on the thin side as only seven vets managed to make the kick off. Still as Zsu Zsu would be the first to admit, size isn't everything. As it happened we had a superb session with the games all being contested at a high level and indeed were incredibly close. The Awayers took the first game with an exhibition of passing and sharp shooting as Anthony Graham led by example and Graham Levine toe poked a number of successful strikes. Zsu Zsu was surprisingly mobile as he threaded pass after pass into the paths of his marauding strikers. Still the game was finely balanced at 9-9 before yet another Graham Levine toe poke ripped into the onion bag to win .it. The Homers then came into their own in the second game as I started to save the odd shot and Paulo continued his new role of goal scorer (he hit six of their goals in the first game). Chris Anthony and Chris Todd also started to click and they built a 9-5 lead. Then panic set in, Anthony Graham took over and drove the Awayers on to draw level at 9-9. This time however Chris Todd stepped up and drove in the winner for the Homers to level proceedings at one game all. Now for the decider - however, things took a bad turn when Graham Levine who had already taken a whack flat in the face from one of my clearances, pulled a muscle. I swapped with Graham who went in goal for the Homers whilst I played sweeper come defensive mid fielder and temporary striker for the Awayers. Again the game was close but with the help of my three sweetly struck goals the Awayers were victorious again to close at 10-9.  So it was worth turning up for but here's hoping more of the lads turn out next week when we can have a proper good contest although once again - football was the only winner tonight.

Sunday 3rd July 2016 : Before tonight's report I want to mention that on 28th June 2010 we lost Rick's dad Robbie. It doesn't seem like 6 years have passed since Robbie tragically took his own life after suffering for a number of years with depression. Now Robbie wasn't the most gifted of players but what he did have was an abundance of effort and energy and a huge dose of enthusiasm. Maybe he never managed to emulate the goalscoring touch of his Baggies hero Jeff Astle but, he did make a sturdy and effective defender who was very difficult to get past. I remember saying at the time, we will never forget Robbie and that still stays with me. Of course we have Rick still playing with the vets to great effect and I'm sure if Robbie is looking down he would be immensely proud of his boy. Check out Robbie here Vets Hall of Fame
As for the footy tonight, in contrast to Engerlands pathetic display in slipping out of the Euro's with nothing more than a whimper, the Vets fought out an epic battle between two hard working sides. Mary's Moaners took the first game by the narrowest of margins 10-9 with Paulo whipping in three goals on the trot including the winner. The second game was equally tense with The Young Guns victorious at 10-8 in spite of Anthony Graham tweaking a muscle. You don't often come up with two closer games than these with both sides going at it hammer and tongues. In the decider at 4-4 our cockney hippie leader called for the Golden Goal. Up stepped Johnboy to mis hit the winner for the Moaners. A brilliant session played in great spirit.
Now the Euro's are over it's Hello Guardiola and exciting times at City and Greater Manchester's other big club Stockport County, have new manager Jim Gannon sending his lads up to New Mills AFC on Tue 2nd August 7.45pm

Sunday 10th July 2016 : Another disappointing turnout this week with only eight of the lads showing up. Still we had a good run out with the Young Guns running out clear winners with victories in all the completed games. Maybe Mary's Moaners were carrying two over sixties whilst the Young Guns had only one over seventy player. Perhaps the speed of Anthony and Richard tipped the balance but with Johnboy hitting more than a few good goals and even Zsu Zsu chipping in with more than his share, the Moaners were always in with a shout. However you can't take anything from the Young Guns who had the benefit of my eye for a through ball from the back and Chris Todd's ability to get on the end of them.
Still the overall feeling was one of disappointment with in particular the low turnout and lack of commitment from the no shows.
As it is we cannot afford to sustain the sessions with such low attendances.  Our leader has suggested all regular players commit to pay a monthly figure, we need 13 regular players to cover the fees. Then the players who turn up on a whim would be charged a higher than the equivalent weekly fee paid by the regulars.
In the last three weeks we have had 7, 8 and 10 players, that's a 14 player shortfall at £5 per player that works out at £70 we are behind in subs. Now players who turn up irregularly and expecting to play must show some more commitment or there will be no session waiting for them. Please get in touch with either myself at malchough@btinternet.com or Keith Mastin at kcmastin@aol.com  with your own ideas or commitment to the suggestion.

Sunday 17th July 2016 : Things are getting a little desperate down at the Leisure Centre with the Vets. Again only eight of the boys made a show for the weekly spanking, things are now reaching a critical point - we need support or it's finished. Next week we are without Anthony Graham and Rick Westwood who are on holiday and Johnboy had a bit of a knee problem tonight making him a doubt. Chris Todd is placing an advert on New Mills Web requesting fresh players. Anyway we carried on as best we could tonight in a lung busting hour and a half of four a side which somewhat ended up looking like walking football as we were on our arses. The Young Guns won the first game but Mary's Moaners hit back winning the next two before the Young Guns drew level at two games each. The final game was one way traffic as the Young guns cruised to a 10-4 deciding win. Josh Mackie did his best to drive the Moaners to great heights well supported by Chris Podmore who I apologise to for clipping his ankle. I have to give credit to old Zsu Zsu Mastin who despite his great years keeps plodding on and whacked in a couple or five classic goals. Overall it wasn't the most memorable of sessions but we had a pretty good workout and I think all went home reasonably happy although Podders maybe had a sore ankle!

Sunday 24th July 2016 : After two successive weeks of four a side the numbers were swelled tonight to nine bodies. At least we didn't suffer the indignity of not having enough for a quorum. So we played four a side with myself alternating in goal between the games. The night progressed with the Strollers winning the first, third and forth games. What a yoyo session it was with all the games  very close. Great to welcome back Proudy after his extended absence which included the Five Peaks Challenge successfully completed. Ronnie Dooley returned to bolster the Moaners who were missing Johnboy and Paulo. Josh Mackie was the beef in the Strollers team playing some slick footy backed up well by Proudy and Chris Anthony. Graham Levine spent much of the time as the last line in defence although he found time to net his fair share of goals. Sadly his night came to an end when his ankle packed up on him again in a Vincent Kompany type moment, there was a groan around the Sports Hall as he went down in a heap after scoring the winning goal in the third game. We carried on allowing me to return to my customary role as sweeper and mid field maestro. As for Mary's Moaners, Chris Todd played a superb guest role with sweeping passes and outstanding strikes on goal. Podders did what he always does, picked off passes, chased and harried plus, fired in plenty of goals. Zsu Zsu Mastin also did what he always does, flattered to deceive, miss hit passes all over the place, left snail trails and generally made a nuisance of himself. Ronnie The Scottish Express demonstrated what we've always known, when it comes to goalscoring the Jocko's aren't the first pick. I asked his missus what's the first thing Ronnie does when Scotland beat England? She said "turn off the Playstation!"
Here's hoping next week we get back to a full turnout, in spite of Graham's injury - we can expect Anthony, Rick and Paulo all to return and hopefully we'll soon welcome back Rick Pott, he's been missed.

Our Hippie Leader has negotiated a different booking scheme to bring into line our failing numbers. He has had a proposal of a one hour session (starting in September) if the numbers are below 10 and a further half hour if we have sufficient numbers for three teams. Thanks to Keith for arranging this and hopefully we will be able to carry on our brilliant Sunday night sessions.

Sunday 31st July 2016 : The expected rush of participants didn't materialise tonight but we were back to ten vets to make for an interesting encounter. Mary's Moaners have been quite consistent in providing us with a regular squad but they needed to add Rick Evans to their numbers for this evenings games. To be fair I think Rick was the difference to the two teams giving the Moaners the cutting edge they've been lacking in recent weeks. Attacking like a Whirling Dervish on Speed he tackled like a good 'un and fired in the goals like a errrr, good 'un. Chris Todd was the outstanding player for the Oldish Guns although he was well backed up by Rick Westwood and Anthony Graham. Chris Anthony had a "Frankie Burton" type session, probably the older vets will remember what these were like. I had a mixed night in nets, one minute gifting the Moaners like charity week and next making better stops than the emergency one on my driving test. Podders gave his usual wham bam thank you mam 120% performance whilst Paulo was still on his holidays. Rocket Ronnie did his best to destroy the fabric of the building with his shooting but still managed a couple or three crackers in off the posts. Zsu Zsu was the victim of my better goalkeeping failing to hit the old onion bag all night. For the record, Mary's Moaners won the first and third games 10-8, 10-6 and The Oldish Guns won the second game 10-9. Roll on next week when we look forward to more of the same

Sunday 7th August 2016 : Fantastic session tonight with two really well balanced sides fighting it out at full chat. The Mary's Moaners had the advantage of an extra man but as usual the quick passing and running into space of the Young Guns made for a fascinating game. The scores crept along with neither side getting more than two goals ahead. Chris Podmore and Rick Evans were the main goal scorers for the Moaners but they were matched by Anthony, Josh and Rick Westwood for the Young Guns. I don't mind admitting I was stemming the flow in nets for the Young Guns and Chris Anthony was busy up front keeping the Moaners defence on their toes. Paulo and Ronnie were working their tripes off to keep the Young Guns at bay and finally at 9-9 something had to go. Both teams really went for it with Ade Hewitt coming close for the Moaners but it was Josh who finally ripped in the winner for an exhausted Young Guns. One of the best games without doubt for many moons with all 11 players busting a gut in search of victory. Chris Anthony had to leave twenty minutes from the end to watch his beloved City live on TV, he did quite rightly tell us before we started but, turning out for his fiver subs was well appreciated. The second game was a simple 5 a side when Ade was recruited to replace Chris in spite  of carrying a foot injury. Mary's moaners won this game 10-5 but to be honest, both teams were breathing out their arses after that first game which took the best part of an hour.
We did miss a milestone at the start of July when we completed 28 years of unbroken vets 5 a side - Not bad lads so lets keep it up and go for 30 years..

Sunday 14th August 2016 : Back to three teams tonight as fifteen good men turned out for the Sunday night feast of football. In Olympic week the Gold Medal went to the Young Guns who gave a Mo Farah type performance beating Mary's Moaners 7-0 in the first game. They continued in the same vein for the best part of an hour patiently passing and moving with great skill. Anthony Graham and Rick Evans dominated at the back while  Josh Mackie sat just behind Ade Hewitt and I mopped up in nets, a Guardiola style master plan if there ever was one. However, just past the hour mark the Strollers came up with their own master plan, shoot on sight and win the second balls. Proudy fired a long ranger through through a crowded defence and caught me unsighted that was followed by a stonker from Johnboy and although Josh pulled one back Rick Westwood fired in a corker to finally knock the Young Guns off their perch 3-1. A 1-1 draw followed against Mary's Moaners and that was that. As for the rest Graham Levine made some fine saves in nets, Chris Podmore ran himself ragged, Ronnie Dooley miss-fired like Del Boys Reliant and Chris Anthony tested the new arguing with the referee rule to it's limit.
Finally a big thank you to "Visit New Mills" Quiz night who donated last weeks quiz night proceedings to the Vets, a grand total of £185.00   Keith donated a bottle of wine for the raffle plus a voucher for one free session of 5 a side.
Received an email from Nigel this week as follows
Hi Malc good to hear from you - I did pop in to the Leisure Centre last Sunday (7th Aug) and watched a few minutes from the balcony and saw your valiant goalkeeping skills on show!
I am pretty well recovered - back to work full time - cycling to Whaley and generally getting back to normal activity - as you say have achieved re entry to the Samba band!
Hoping to get back to footie soon but I am advised I should have a mask to protect the reconstructed nose- remade from bits of my rib cartilage and bits off my arm!
Soon as I get one I am hoping to turn up again on Sundays though expectation of air shots and snail pace are high!
Good to hear from you !

Sunday 21st August 2016 : Superb turnout again at the Leisure Centre this evening and we were rewarded with an equally superb 5 a side session. Highlight of the night was the return of Nigel Caldwell for his first appearance since September of last year after serious surgery to his nose and face. Welcome back Nigel, you have been missed. Nigel was pretty effective in the Strollers line up defending as if he'd never been away. Also returning from injury was Rick Pott who gingerly gave his knee a good hours workout, finding the net on the way for the Strollers. Rick Evans again played well and he and Ade Hewitt provided most of the goals for the Strollers while Graham Levine threw himself about in nets. Mary's Moaners gave the Old Guns a run for their money with debutant Ryan Miekel, the giant Jocko replacing the missing Johnboy, firing in a few neat goals to boot. This raises the question of how many foreign players we allow in a team with Ronnie Dooley adding to the skirt wearers and our cockney hippie leader Zsu Zsu Mastin spending his recreation time in Eire with the Paddies, he definitely has Celtic leanings..... Anyway young Chris Podmore was again the hub which Mary's Moaners revolve round tackling like a deluded combine harvester and firing in spectacular goals but, on the night it was The Old Guns who just about shaded things. Josh Mackie was unstoppable as a striker benefiting from the more experienced older legs of Proudy, Chris Anthony and Chris Todd as they loaded the Guns, Josh pulled the triggers. Paulo Garner quietly got on with his game for the Moaners who came on strong at the end but the night belonged to our returning hero's Nigel and Pottie, great to have them back.
