Sunday March 13th 2016 : It was quite a surprise when 12 of the guys turned up tonight at the Leisure Centre as injuries and the rags being on Sky threatened to leave us short. However, we enjoyed a quality session with both sides having their purple patches. Mary's Moaners took the first game by a whisker with Mike Adrio the difference in the teams. I swear that boy could find Scouse Ron with a pass and he hasn't been down for six years!! Ronnie The Scots Guard held Mary's together at the back whilst Podders and Paulo prowled the mid field allowing Johnboy to plunder up front. Zsu Zsu Mastin made some fine saves stood between the posts one in particular would have done Sam Bartram proud. Next game the Young Brothers got themselves into gear with Anthony Graham finally shaking off his hangover to direct the band and Rick Westwood dancing rings round the Moaners at will. Chris Anthony looking quite "Silvaesque" and Rick Evans tackling like a combined harvester. James Kemp was on a one man mission to chase down any attacking Moaner and I was having a personal dual with Mike Adrio which I have to admit he won. But in the end the Young Brothers won this game and indeed were streets ahead in the decider when Mary's Moaners old hippie leader drew the curtains on another seriously good session.
Next week myself, John Bates and Chris Anthony will be at the Etihad to witness City's progress into the quarter finals of the Champions League and on Sunday there's the small matter of a derby game with our neighbours from Stretford - COME ON CITY!!!

Sunday March 20th 2016 : Manchester Derby Day so our usual selection of Blues and Reds were missing from tonight’s action. Even so enough vets and Young guns turned out to compete in a lively and competitive six a side session.
Malc Stubbs bolstered the defence of the Young Guns making his first appearance of 2016. The first match was looking like it would last all night three or four goals slotted home for either side, with the goalkeepers blocking out the rest of the attempts. The Young Guns then stepped up a gear and were just too quick for the Moaners. Rick Westwood banging in a hot shot or two, Josh Mackie and Anthony Graham adding goals of quality. Chris Todd slamming home a net busting boomer and Ade Hewitt pouncing on anything on the edge of the area. Game over 10 -5 leaving the Moaners scratching their heads.
The second leg seemed to be going the same way a slick passing Young Guns romping into a 7-1 lead. Time for some Moaners magic. Chris Podmore reduced the deficit with a couple of well-earned individual goals. Keith Proudfoot also claimed a disputed “In off the bar? over the line?” effort. Keith Mastin re found his passing game setting up Jonny Boy to spin in his trade mark special. The Moaners were now tackling and blocking and giving the Young Guns no room to enjoy their total football. Paulo and Ronny pushed higher up the pitch and this unlikely double act each grabbed hat tricks with their chuckle brothers, to me to you style of play. The Moaners were now within one shot of victory. That shot was supplied from close range by Chris Podmore. Come back complete 10 -9 to the Moaners.
The final and deciding game could have gone either way as legs began to tire and old war wounds started to ache and re open. Not enough adjectives for these pages to describe the extraordinary goals in this encounter . Only to say the last word went to the Moaners, Keith Proudfoot whacking in a bobbling long range winner past Chris Todd in the Young Guns goal. Final score 10-6 to the Moaners.
Not too sure whether there will be football next week Gentlemen. As the Easter Bank holiday will rob us of the core of our squad, I am sure our editor will put a message on this site.
See you soon for more of the same and have a wonderful Easter break whatever you are doing.

Sunday March 27th 2016 : Only 10 vets graced the Leisure Centre at Hyde Bank tonight but the stay aways missed a right treat. The first game produced a right ding dongeroo when the Easter Bunnies hopped into a 6-1 lead with some seriously good football leaving Mary's Moaners gasping in their wake. They struggled to cope with the slick inter passing from the two Rick's, Ade and Proudy who seemed to have a complete grip on the game. However, Mike Adrio had other ideas and he started his own brand of passing, picking out his team mates like a good egg. Soon 6-1 became 6-5 and Mary's were back in the hunt. Ronnie Dooley whacked in a stunner to take the lead followed by a blinder from Zsu Zsu Mastin to make it 8-6. Easter Bunnies equalised then Mary's again struck through Johnboy. Finally, Mike sent over the perfect cross and Chris Podmore nailed it - 10-9 and a win for Mary's. In the second game it was again nip and tuck as both teams traded goals and at 9-9 in was the right foot of Rick Evans who planted the winner past a bemused Mike Adrio. In the deciding game normal service was resumed as the Easter Bunnies again went rampant hopping into a 3-1 lead. It was at this point I came out of nets helping the Bunnies to go 7-2 up with some passing as smooth as chocolate. With further strikes from Proudy and Ade Hewitt the game finished 10-4.  I had a touch of the Stigmata's after letting Ronnie the Rockets long ranger through my hands but this didn't stop the Easter Bunnies celebrating an Easter Passover.
We were all dead on our feet at the end but will rise again next week and do it all again.......

Sunday 3rd April 2016 : Quite surprised at the small numbers this week, I as expecting a bumper turnout as there were  no distractions such as exciting Sky football (Stretford were at home to Everton). So the ten that bothered to rack up set about the task of another scintillating session of 5 a side footy. Mary's Moaners welcomed back James Kemp into their fold to cover for the absent Johnboy  Goodwin. The Outsiders were a mixture of the Strollers and Young Guns and it soon became apparent that the mixture didn't exactly gel. To cut a long report short, Mary's Moaners dominated the evening  playing as a team as opposed to a bunch of individuals. A close first game was nicked by Mary's followed by a couple of drubbings. James Kemp was like a man on a mission, Chris Podmore much the same, even Zsu Zsu got in on the act. 'Nuff said, my team were left beaten and crestfallen.
Next week we need more bodies down to swell our shrinking bank balance so get you arses into gear and roll up!!

Sunday 10th April 2016 : With Stretford United getting a mauling at Tottenham on Sky we found ourselves down to ten souls again this week. Good to see Mary's Moaners back to full strength with the return of Johnboy to the ranks. This meant James Kemp was released to bolster the Young Guns along with Rick Evans. Last weeks Mary's dominance was completely reversed in this session as the Young Guns put on a superb demonstration of passing and movement winning three games on the trot 10-4, 10-5 and 10-3. Kempo popped in a couple of seriously good volleys and goals flowed from Anthony Graham, Rick Evans and Rick Westwood. By the time the forth game came round the Young Guns were losing interest and that allowed Mary's to gain a consolation win to bring the proceedings to a satisfactory close. In the final game Zsu Zsu Mastin did manage to rattle in a real beauty but overall the contest was really over as a contest by that time.

Sunday 17th April 2016 : Fifteen rabble rousers in attendance this Sunday, making up our three more traditional teams. The return of the Silver Fox Graham Levine for his first game of 2016. Also coming back the recently injured Rick Pott complete with Big Black Strap on. ( For his Knee …..Not in his shorts !!?? ). The first match saw the Strollers put the slow out of the blocks Moaners to the sword. Chris Anthony ghosting in unmarked starting this evenings goal fest. Chris Podmore found the net twice before rockets from Chris Todd and Rick Evans, plus a cracker from Graham Levine secured their win.
The inform Young Guns continued their Sunday dominance Josh Mackie replacing Rick Westwood to great effect. Linking up with Anthony Graham to score some splendid goals. Anthony was also in the mood using strength and guile to create and score. Poor old Rick Pott pulled up injured after 10 minutes and bravely played the rest of the matches as goalkeeper. Ade Hewitt was more miss than hit. Not until the cleaning lady was out with hoover did one of his shots find the net. Dave Brown was the solid defensive wall for these starlets also popping in a goal or two when required.
It was looking like the Young Guns were going on another unbeaten run, but the Football Gods of Olympus conjured up a storm that propelled Rick Evans to smash in a brace for the Strollers to snatch an unlikely 2-0 win. Helped by the Goalkeeping of Keith Proudfoot, who also pulled up lame and continued the evening between the sticks.
After their early defeats the Moaners were stringing together some convincing wins. Keith Mastin and Jonny Boy using their years of experience both finding the net. Chris Podmore and Ronny linking up to score with quality. Even Paulo got in on the act. Not until the last match of the night did the Moaners manage to defeat team of the week The Young Guns. A perfect on the run one two from Paulo to Ronny, The Flying Scotsman making no mistake volleying home his close range winner.
So another Groin straining, Shin kicking, Knee twisting, Ankle biting, Finger breaking, Lung busting ninety minutes of football is brought to a close. Our Thoughts and best wishes go to Malc Hough from all the lads and we hope to see you back soon. A few missing on Holiday next week so “ Your Vets Need You.“

My thanks as always to our guest writer. Hope to be back between the posts next week, bruised battered and downhearted but not beaten yet....

Sunday 24th April 2016 : Quite unusual tonight in that Mary's Moaners were short of players and had to draft in Ade Hewitt, Graham Levine and Chris Todd to make up the squad which in actual fact suffered as a result through a total lack of moaning. Chris and myself had the privilege of joining the Young Guns and what a pleasure it was. It was a joy to watch the interpassing and trickery of Anthony, Rick and Josh as they swept aside the Moaners winning three games to one. It wasn't by any means an easy ride for the Young Guns who were behind in two of the games 7-9 and 6-9 but with their swift passing added to the experience of old head Chris Anthony who, has done it all before, they were able to fight back and hit the winners. In the final game of the evening the Young Guns took their foot off the peddle and paid the price going down 10-6 with Chris Todd thumping in a few crackers. Mary's Moaners missing the marauding Scot in midfield and the enthusiasm of Podders as well as the old Cockney Hippie although their replacements didn't do too badly. As for my part, I have to decide whether to continue just goalkeeping duties if I am to carry on playing. Tonight I had a pretty good night playing a bit like Joe Hart but other weeks more like John Burridge, I'll have to see. Hilarious moment when Josh disappeared through the fire doors at speed followed just as quickly by Graham Levine locking them much to our amusement!

Sunday 1st May 2016 : The first of May?….. Feels more like the first of October. It might be wintry outside, but inside the leisure centre the sunny samba drums of soccer warmed the hearts of the hopeful.
Once again just twelve vets on show. The regular Moaners boosted by Rick Evans and Dave Brown. The Young Guns increased their attacking options with James Kemp, Chris Todd and Graham Levine. Before Kick off our illustrious leader Keith Mastin asked his team mates to have faith in the face of this formidable opposition.
The first Match was the pick of the games, ending in a narrow 10 – 8 win for the Young Guns. The Trio of Chris Podmore, John Goodwin and Rick Evans kept the Moaners hopes alive with some fine goals. Eventually the pace, skill and goal scoring accuracy of Josh Mackie, Rick Westwood and Anthony Graham wearing down the dogged defending of Keith Mastin and Dave Brown.
The next two games ended in convincing wins for the Young Guns. The energy of James Kemp earning himself loads of goals, Chris Todd and Graham Levine also benefited from the time and space created by the Guns. Each unmarked for many an easy finish. When the Moaners did rally they were thwarted by excellent goal keeping from the opposition. Paulo did manage a halfway line screamer past a startled Josh Mackie but these opportunities were rare rather than the norm.
Chris Podmore stayed professional to the end and is a credit to the Game of 5 a side. Battling on regardless of the results to score where possible. There was a call at the end of the session for new teams next week. The last few encounters have been too one sided so it might just be time to mix it all up a bit, keeping everybody interested and still in the love with the beautiful game.

Sunday 8th May 2016 :     What’s happened to Five a side Sunday ? Three Teams of Six battling it out for the bragging rights on Monday Morning. Not anymore. Just enough aging Sheep to be put to the slaughter once again by our rampant resident Wolves. Still as ever for those involved a lively and enjoyable addiction to the drug that is playing football. The Sheep put in a Herculean effort in the first match and looked like they might pull the wool over the Wolves eyes leading 8-4 and looking worthy winners. They forgot however the Josh Factor. Mr Mackie taking control as pack leader inspired the Wolves, who fought tooth and claw, scattering the sheep back into their pens. James Kemp broke out to fire in goal number nine, to excited bleats from his team mates. However it was all but mint sauce. Late strikes from Anthony Graham and Rick Westwood sealed the win after Josh had scored four on the bounce to level the game. That was the closest the Sheep came to a win all evening.
The rest of the games went the way of the Wolves. Chris Todd continuing his fine shooting form with some excellent goals. Dave Brown rocketed a few past the weary opposition. The Spring lambs James Kemp and Chris Podmore chased everything and were often rewarded with fine strikes into the net for their efforts. Mutton dressed as lamb Keith Mastin also managed a goal or two. The Raging Ram Rick Evans had a mixed night. Creating and scoring in the first two games then with 20 minutes to go he left the field in a hough (enough of that matey!  Malc). Preferring to make his own way to the abattoir rather than be nibbled to a slow death by the Wolves………. Bringing the silence of the lambs.
A man down , Paulo kept goal with all the attributes of a heat exhausted ewe. Loan wolf Dave Brown transferred over to the Sheep. Who rallied enough for Chris Podmore to net the Golden Gold against the Pack of four.
No Youngsters next week, James Kemp is Marathon running in Cumbria, Chris Todd has a Gig so that’s Five of this week’s boys un available. In the words of Delia Smith can I offer this rallying cry to any Vets old and New reading this post.
Where are you ? where are you ? lets be having you. Come on !!

Thanks to our guest writer for yet another quality report. I'll be back in nets this Sunday  and hopefully we'll see the return of  a few of the boys to make up the fading numbers. Ronnie has had a fall getting out of his bath (dozey sod) but should return to the Mary's fold this week. Sky games finish at 16:45 so there shouldn't be an issue there -happy days

Sunday 15th May 2016 : Very strange tonight as we were without the Young Guns, busy on a stag night in Germany. The ten vets who did turn out though made a good fist of things in a brilliant session of 5 a side footy at a more normal pace befitting a bunch of old giffers. The first game is always the most important for me as this is when the teams are at their peak and so it came as somewhat of a surprise that the Strollers took a 3-0 lead against a full strength Mary's Moaners. With Ade Hewitt and Graham Levine thumping in cracking goals the stage was set. Mary's came back with Chris Podmore and Paulo Garner both wellying in goals of their own and at 6-6 it was anyone's game. Step forward Chris Todd and Dave Brown to fire in a couple of crackers and more from Ade and Graham and the game was won. 10-6.  After that Mary's got back into the second game and took advantage of the Strollers tiring legs, no breaks in goal for them as I was the fixed goalie. Jonboy Goodwin eventually got one past me followed by the Old Cockney Hippie Zsu Zsu Mastin ripping one in. More came from Ronnie McDooley and although our goal grabbers kept at it Mary's shaded the second game to level the series. In the deciding game we didn't get too far as time was marching on so we went for the golden goal, smacked home by Chris Todd making the Strollers team of the week - yeahhhh
Hopefully we'll be back up to full strength next week, no distractions  or stag nights, just a few early nights to recover.

Sunday 22nd May 2016 : My first game as a 70 year old tonight and I enjoyed it just as much as I did when I played in our very first Vets session as a 42 year old, that was 28 years ago. Wow, where has it all gone?
Anyway, tonight's session was a bit of a roller coaster, we kicked off 6 Strollers against Mary's Moaners 5. Well we put them to the sword with an astonishing exhibition of passing and shooting leaving Mary's gasping from a 10-0 defeat. I celebrated becoming a septuagenarian by keeping a clean sheet in goal with a string of saves that Abu Hamza would have been proud of. In the second game Graham Levine joined the fray balancing up the sides and Mary's at last got stuck in winning 10-8 with Graham, Chris Podmore and James Kemp all finding the net. The third game saw the Young Strollers showing greater conviction as Anthony, Chris Todd and Rick started to fire in the goals. A welcome return for Peter Greathead saw him have a fine session with some slick passing and a number of quality goals for the Young Strollers in a 10-02 win. The forth game saw the roller coaster once more in action as Mary's hit back to win the final game 10-3 in extra time. Paulo drove his team forward with one of his custom howitzers from way out to lead by example. Further goals from Johnboy and Graham Levine with one that fair fizzed in at the near post. Chris Anthony was still by the pool in Florida as he ran out of steam for this last challenge showing the ball control of a sailor in a brothel. So as the evening passed into extra time the winning Mary's goal hit the Young Strollers net bringing the curtain down on yet another exhilarating night of 5 a side footy.

Sunday 29th May 2016 : Only nine of the lads turned out on this super sunny afternoon but those who did provided us with a brilliant session of five a side footy. First game on as usual was a storming affair with both sides giving it the full gun. Difference in the sides was The Young Strollers ability to convert their chances with Graham Levine lashing in more than his fair share of goals. Peter Greathead was masterful in nets pulling out a string of superb diving saves that belied his years (whatever they are). In reply the Moaners Select misfired like Del Boys old Reliant although the lads selected aren't necessarily known for their goal grabbing other than Chris Podmore who in all fairness grabbed more than he missed. The Young Strollers took the first game 10-08 but soon found themselves on the receiving end as the Moaners started to find the target and I started to stop the flood of goals that I had faced in the previous game. Ronnie and Chris Todd linked well to lead the way as the Moaners ran out 10-06 winners. In the deciding game it was back to one way traffic as Anthony Graham drove forward to feed Rick Westwood and Graham Levine with the ammunition to fire home and cruise to a 10-04 win.
All in all a really good session in which Peter Greathead really impressed with a fine all round effort. Next week we need more bodies down so shake off those cobwebs and get your miserable frames down to the Leisure Centre, we need the funds.

Sunday 5th June 2016 : On a hot and sticky evening eleven men turned out to brave the elements and play a five v six 5 a side session. In the first game it was nip and tuck as Mary's gave it their all and poured forward with James Kemp and Chris Podmore covering every inch of the pitch tackling and harrying. Josh, Anthony and Rick kept popping the goals in but as quick as they hit the net Mary's came back, Paulo in particular thumping in a couple of long rangers in. The game reached fever pitch as both teams fought for the winner at 9-9 and it was Mary's Moaners who snatched it with Podders poking in a rebound from my save.
The second game was a game too far for Mary's as The Young Guns passed them to death. The boys were superb with Chris Anthony mopping up at the back and laying the ball off to the marauding Young Guns who swept to a 10-2 victory. Crowning moment was when Anthony Graham nut-megged James before romping on to net a cracker.
Well that was about it as a contest, The Young Guns had run themselves to a standstill and were picked off as the Moaners ran amok going into a 9-4 lead. However, pride drove the Young Guns back into it and they looked to pull off a thrilling come back at 9-9 but up stepped Malc Stubbs to lash in Mary's winner. Maybe the Moaners with their extra man deserved their 2-1 win but at the end of the day, football as ever was the winner. Great session though lads.
