Sunday 5th July 2015 : Well at last I returned to the playing area of the New Mills Vets! I have to admit it was not only a nervous experience but also quite an emotional one for me. Twelve weeks have passed since my operation and I've had a long slog of recuperation involving exercise and ever lengthening walks. Over the past weeks I've refereed a few games but to be quite honest it was torture watching the real action so tonight was a massive occasion for me which I truly appreciated. As for the football it turned out to be a fine nights football with all three teams inseparable in terms of results. Mary's Moaners won the first of the tussles beating the Young Guns 4-1. Next up The Strollers beat Mary's 1-0 followed by a draw between the Young Guns and the Strollers, so the pattern was set for the whole session. Great to see Dan Bailey back in his first game with us since 28th September 2014, he helped himself to a handful of goals looking like he'd never been away. As usual Josh Mackie was at the centre of most things for his team with Kempo backing him up. Chris Podmore celebrated his success in passing his FA Coaching badge with his accustomed busy performance with Johnboy and Ronnie the rocket both bangin' in the goals. As for my team the Strollers we had a good night with Ade Hewitt and Graham Levine both firing on all cylinders while Chris Todd and Proudy chipped in with their share. I have to say though that my goal to win our final game against the Young Guns took the biscuit. Ghosting into space behind their defence Chris Todd fired the perfect through ball, in one movement I spun round and unleashed an unstoppable shot past the bemused Josh Mackie in nets - Malc is back, heart is beating like a good 'un.......

Sunday 12th July 2015 : Only twelve vets rolled up tonight for the Sunday night thrash but definitely a classic bunch of vets on view. The Strollers borrowed Josh Mackie from the Young Guns and Paulo Garner from the depleted Mary's Moaners but we were bolstered by the return of Chris Anthony after a break of 15 weeks, longer than my recovery. Having said that, Chris was well on form snapping up a number of excellent goals and his overall contribution was influential in the Strollers taking the honours with a two games to one winning advantage. The Not So Young Guns took the first game playing some brilliant flowing football with Dan Bailey and Graham Levine grabbing the lions share of goals. Anthony Graham was pinging the ball about with great style as Chris Podmore harried and hassled in mid field. However the next game was the deciding rubber and a closer game you couldn't have wished for. Both teams pressed and pushed as the scores changed this way and that. Proudy and Josh stretched the NSYG's to the limit and finally got their reward with a last gasp winner to take it 10-09. After that it was no contest with the Strollers roller coasting to a 10-06 win with Paulo notching a superb double and Chris Todd also firing in. James Garbett took a few for the team while in nets but played his part in a good all round team. All in all a super nights footy played in true style by 12 committed players.
Bumped into Neil McLennon on Saturday cutting his hedge, you'll all be pleased to know that you can now walk up Church Road without having to walk in the road!!

Sunday 19th July 2015 : Seventeen of the boys rocked up tonight and enjoyed a full bloodied six a side contest. The Young Guns took the honours on the night but were run close by Mary's Moaners. Slick passing was the order of the night and the Young Guns ruled the roost on that one. Graham Levine was their top scorer with some outstanding goals. Josh Mackie, Anthony Graham and Dan Bailey all linked well and were involved in most of the action for the Young Guns. Rick Pott was on the mark with a fair number of goals including a couple of serious toe nobbers. Mary's Moaners also made a good fist of it with Mike Adrio making his first appearance since mid February earlier this year. Mary's goals came from all the team with Paulo netting in the last minutes. I didn't notice Zsu Zsu Mastin actually hitting the net but he did his fair share of defending and passed the ball well. As for my team the Strollers, James Kemp, Ade Hewitt and Chris Todd worked hard but the support from the rest of us was a little on the thin side. I had an absolute mare of a game, don't know what went wrong - just not at the races. We competed well but couldn't hit the onion bag!
Good news - Proudy and his mates completed the four peaks challenge this evening, a great effort by the boys. Still time to donate........

Sunday 26th July 2015 : Fifteen vets tonight made for a brilliant nights five a side football. All sides set off a a frantic pace with Mary's Moaners taking the initial advantage but as the night wore on The Strollers found their rhythm and just about finished top side on the evening. Mike Adrio took on the responsibility of netting the chances which in fairness he mainly created with some fine solo runs.Neil Mac, Chris Todd and Graham Levine added their share and even I chipped in with four of my own, not bad for a 69  year old with a dodgy ticker. Johnboy gave Josh Mackie a good old tongue lashing for disallowing a goal, now he knows why they call his team Mary's Moaners. The Young Guns were definitely miss firing tonight, maybe down to Anthony Graham celebrating his birthday last night. Josh put in his usual shift and Rick Pott re-introduced himself to the Leisure Centre floor at five to seven. As for the Mary's Moaners Johnboy marked his 64th birthday yesterday with a decent enough session whilst Zsu Zsu managed to hit the onion bag on three occasions. So another 90 minutes of quality footy by all was completed without any problems and for me in particular, an absolute pleasure to share it with the boys.

Message from Paulo - I was asked by Chris Podmore to set up a Barclays Fantasy Football League for the Vets as a bit of fun. Just enter a Team on the site – fantasy.premierleague.com or click onto Barclays Premier league and follow the link for fantasy football.

Sunday 2nd August 2015 : Quick report tonight as I'm going to the Cáfe Bombay in Chinley for a Ruby Murray with my wife and daughter. Eleven bodies made their way to the Leisure Centre this evening for our weekly thrash and what a cracker it turned out to be. I was drafted in to Mary's Moaners much to my shock but, it turned out to be a shrewd move as they took advantage of my slick passing ability. Sadly we ended up runners up as the Young Guns came good, coming back from a game down to win two matches to one. James Kemp, who arrived for the contest on his push bike, ran his orange socks off for his team well supported by Dan Bailey. For Mary's Moaners, Ronnie the rocket Dooley was on fire banging them in for fun. Mike Adrio played a couple of blinding passes, picking up on my example, and Paulo was a rock, or crock at the back. Hopefully we'll get a few more lads down next week when we can get back to three sides. Next week sees the start of the new Premier season so here's hoping that all the lads teams do well, especially my glorious Blues.

Sunday 9th August 2015 : Fifteen of the lads turned out and enjoyed a hum dinger of a session at the Leisure Centre tonight. Mary's Moaners continued to be the team to beat on a night when they enjoyed much of the play. Ronnie the rocket Dooley kicked off the session with a blinding hat trick in the first game against the Young Guns. They continued their run with a 3-2 win against the Strollers with Zsu Zsu and Johnboy hitting the net. A draw saw them still unbeaten in their second game against the Young Guns with Anthony Graham sticking one in. However, they came unstuck against the Strollers when Graham Levine, Steve Gerrard and Chris Todd did the damage in a 3-0 win. The rest of the evening was pretty even with the Strollers winning four on the trot and Mary's Moaners still setting the pace. Graham Levine  managed to rip one in from the kick off and John Bates popped in some beaut's. James Kemp covered every inch of the pitch running like a good 'un in a vain attempt to lift his struggling team mates and Chris Anthony made a good fist of defending for the Strollers. Overall a decent ninety minutes of footy played in good spirits, more of the same for next week hopefully.

Just as a matter of interest, watch Chris Todd at the Hare and Hounds on lead guitar with the Carbs   PLAY

Sunday 16th August 2015 :

At 5.30 pm every Sunday night
New Mills vets play 5 a side.
Beneath the glow of fluorescent light
They wear replica shirts with pride.

Young Guns versus Moaners was this week’s test
The Moaners soon three nil down,
Huffing and puffing they did their best.
Then rallied with the arrival of Dave Brown.

Now with six the Moaners competed
But still the Youth caused them Mayhem
Eventually they were defeated.
With goals from Pott, Todd, Mackie and Graham.

The second match was just as good.
With the Moaners finding it hard to score.
Goalkeeping excellence from Rick Westwood.
Verses the shooting boots of Chris Podmore.

Jonny and Keith among the goals.
As were Ronny, Dave and Paulo.
But their defence once more was full of holes
And the Youth stole the win with a Westwood solo.

Time enough for match number three.
The Youth finally beginning to flagg
The Moaners romped in a 10- 2 victory
All players bursting the onion bag.

Win for Youth, but the Moaners scored more .
Next week will do it all again.
For in our heads we hear the crowd roar.
Long may we play the beautiful game.

Brilliant piece of verse from our guest writer, could this be a sign for the future? Well Chris Anthony, John Bates and myself witnessed the demise of Chelsea live at the Emptyhad (record attendance 54,331) but look forward to rejoining the action next week

Sunday 23rd August 2015 : On a night when only ten vets turned up we had to reshuffle the pack somewhat. So as not to split up the Young Guns I joined them to make up the five. Well it turned out to be a master stroke as I became the final piece in the jigsaw, just what they've always needed, someone to put their foot on the ball and direct the traffic. Winning all four games at a canter I must admit it was an absolute pleasure to play with the Young Guns. always someone free to receive the ball plenty of runners to cover my lack of fitness and all with a keen eye for goal. The Wanderers put in a decent enough shift but rarely threatened an in form Young Guns. We need a better turn out next week to put a bit more pressure on the Youngsters. In fairness, Steve Gerrard was carrying an injury for most of the session which restricted the Wanderers forward power - Chris Todd and Chris Podmore battled non stop, Paulo rammed in a couple of crackers and Dave Brown defended valiantly but, The Young Guns held all the winning cards and dealt them to perfection.
After the game we received a bonus when we heard that my glorious Blues had managed a 2-0 win at Goodison Park to top the Premier League and beat a run of winning League games that has stood since the early nineteen hundreds - Perfect!

Sunday 30th August 2015 : Was looking forward to our weekly session and after City's great start to the season rolled up at the Leisure Centre keen to get roocking. The lads started to trickle in one by one until there were six of us however, Dave Brown would probably still have time to roll up and a couple of others were bound to join us but, no show. To think I left United on Sky going  one up just after half time and I'd have to endure the rest of the second half if we called it a night. Reluctantly we did just that but, much to my delight Swansea ripped two in the old onion bag so my depression was lifted. Not too worried about the non appearance of the lads as Zsu Zsu and Podders were in Ireland getting extra training and Paulo and Stevie Gerrard both injured, the Young Guns well overdue a rest, Johnboy relaxing on a sunny beach in warmer climes, Proudy on nights or climbing mountains, Chris Todd playing with The Carbs at The Grouse - should be back to normal next week - hopefully!
